Happy Valentine’s day!
Valentine’s Day is celebrated annually on February 14, as a cultural, religious, and commercial celebration of romance and love.
Traditionally Valentine’s Day was celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of St. Valentine’s murder — which occurred around AD 270.
St. Valentine
One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.
Modern celebration
Valentine’s Day customs of sending greeting cards, or gifting fine chocolates or flowers developed in early modern England. Today Valentine’s Day is celebrated all around the world and especially Asian couples spend a lot of money on Valentine’s gifts.
If you plan to celebrate this day, it’s not the money that counts, but rather the time you choose to give to your partner. Valentine’s day is an opportunity for you and your partner to spend time together, appreciate each other, and celebrate the idea of love and family.
