It is necessary to maintain good oral hygiene from the start. Even before a baby’s teeth come up, you may start wiping their mouth with a soft cloth to remove bacteria. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends switching to a toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste as soon as their teeth start to come up. But babies only need a very small smear of toothpaste — no more than the size of a grain of rice.
