Did you know?
Unmetabolized folic acid (UMFA) occurs when your body cannot fully process the synthetic form of folate found in supplements and fortified foods. This can happen when too much folic acid is consumed, leading to a buildup in the blood. UMFA has been linked to potential health concerns, such as impaired immune function and the masking of a vitamin B12 deficiency. In pregnant women, UMFA might also affect the baby, potentially contributing to altered brain development or increasing the risk of childhood allergies and asthma. To minimize these risks, stick to the recommended dose (400–600 mcg for pregnant women) or consider switching to methylfolate, a natural and easily metabolized form of folate. Always consult your doctor for personalized advice.
