The rooting reflex

Early Childhood Development

The rooting reflex

The rooting reflex occurs when the corner of Your Child’s mouth is stroked or touched.

The baby then turns the head and opens the mouth to follow and “root” in the direction of the stroking.

This reflex helps the little one locate the breast or bottle during feeding. It is present at birth and lasts until Your Child is 3 to 4 months old.

What are reflexes?
Newborn reflexes are reactions that babies are born with. These reflexes indicate that Your Child’s senses and brain are working properly. All reflexes occur at a specific age and will disappear naturally as the baby grows
