What we, as parents, often want or wish for our children is not what they need to develop into healthy, happy, and strong human beings. When they are small, we often have to do things that they don't like — such as denying them ice cream. When they are older, they may do things we don't like, such as taking big risks or meeting friends we are not very fond of. Managing this balance between setting limits and giving them freedom is probably the hardest and most important aspect of parenting.
