Papaya
Food guide
Ripe papaya is a natural and healthy source of beta-carotene, choline, fiber, folate, potassium, vitamins A, B, and C. Unripe papaya however can be dangerous during pregnancy.
What to eat:
- Ripe papaya
What to avoid:
- Unripe or semi-ripe papaya such as the one used in som-tum salad contains a high concentration of the latex that could trigger contractions, leading to early labor, if consumed in large amounts (there is no clear evidence on the exact amount).
- Unripe or semi-ripe papaya also contains papain which your body may mistake for the prostaglandins sometimes used to induce labor.
- Unwashed papaya: Pesticides, such as paraquat, can be very harmful for your developing child
